These are just a few of the many ancient, medieval and modern attractions available in the State. Besides, there are a number of places providing holiday homes, picnic spots, health and new beach resorts. However, for tourists who have comparatively less time at their disposal and want to 'do' Gujarat within a week, three places may be considered a 'must' for them. These are the Gir lion sanctuary, Palitana temples and the Ahmedabad city. All these places could be reached by air within 3 hours from Delhi and 1.5 hours from Bombay and at every point of halt, modern lodging and boarding facilities are available for all classes of people. |

Gir Lion SanctuaryLion can be seen at two places in the world; one in the forests of Africa and other in the Gir forests of Junagadh district of Saurashtra region. About 240 lions and cubs are inhabiting in the Gir forest spread in 1,515 sq. kms. At the western end of the state formerly also known as Kathiawar. The Gir forest is dry and open. As such, it is ideally suited for the abode of lions. In the small hillocks or thickets of trees or on banks of rivers spread over jungle, the lion its shelter home. It lives in-group of eight or ten at each place in the jungle. The group is normally made up of the members of the family coming into its territory. The forest opens up gradually and one comes across a wild species at any time from any corner such as spotted deer, blue bull, four-horned antelopes, peacocks and striped hyenas. And at long last, when one finds himself only a few yards away from a lion of its family, it is an unforgettable experience for the life-time. |

Dwarkadhish Temple
(Jagad Mandir)Dwarka, again, is one of four most scared pilgrimage centers (Chardham) of Hindu faith and is associated with Lord Krishna's life. The main giant ornate shrine is situated on the western most tip of saurastra. Legends say Lord
Krishna and his elder brother Balaram established their kingdom at Kushasthali now known
as Dwarka, has also been one of the four seats (math's) Shri Adi Shankaracharya. Shri Adi
Shankracharya established Sararda Peath at Dwarka in the second decade of the 8th century.
Ornate, exquisite and majestic, Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagad Mandir) is one of the most
imposing five- storied structures of Hindu architecture in Gujarat on the
confluence of river Gomti and Arabian sea. |
